In chapter 2 we meet Myrtle, Tom's secret lover. We soon realize she is the classic, annoying, obnoxious drunk. When Tom and Nick host a small party, things slowly get out of control. During the end of the party, Myrtle starts talking about Daisy and Tom tells her not to. Instead of shutting up, Myrtles wasted self keeps saying "Daisy, Daisy, Daisy...". Tom then punches her in the nose. Owch! The party then ends on a low note. Nick seems to be upset that he let himself get as drunk as he did. I think he likes to watch these people, who have it all, mess things up. He likes to see things go downhill for people who put on a mask--it's fun to watch. I think he's hoping to never end up like Tom.

i totally agree with you lizzie because i myself was shocked when tom punched myrtle in the face causing her to bleed severly. you would think that he does not value daisy's honor by cheating on her, but tom actually to me seems to be the most interesting character in the book so far because not only is he racist and arrogant, he is also defensive to a certain degree. i'm still somewhat confused on why he would do that but i think throughout the book we will come in terms of understanding his character. what he did was totally shocking to me because i thought the only reason he was in a relationship with her was because she had something daisy did not. it turns out to me that tom is sort of manupilative and would use anyone to achieve his personal pleasure and indulgence or perhaps even happiness.
